About Us

"ONE OF BRISTOL'S MOST ICONIC PUBS"

About Us

The Star & Garter pub lies on the border of Montpelier and St Paul's in Bristol. Renovated under new ownership in 2019, every inch pays homage to the pub's history and its significance to the surrounding community as well as the city's music scene. We have cosy covered outdoor seating, indoor seating with a dance floor, a DJ booth, ambient lighting and thoughtful decor. We serve a wide range of drinks, homemade food with Caribbean roots and hold night time events with well known DJs playing a range of soul, reggae, dub and more.

Everybody's welcome.

Our History

The Star & Garter holds huge significance to the surrounding community. The pub has been the inspiration to music legends such as Massive Attack, Roni Size and the late DJ Derek.

The pub's previous owner and local legend, Dutty Ken, died in 2017 and it sadly closed a year on. Many in the community feared the local venue would be turned into flats and people ran campaigns to save it. In 2019 Malcolm Haynes and his family took the pub on and after some renovation works, it was re-opened in 2019 with a suitably big celebration featuring Damien Marley, Dave Chapelle and Roni Size.

Malcolm has spent many years as one of the organisers of Glastonbury Festival, founding the Dance Village now known as Silver Hayes. He coordinated the 2018 St Paul's Carnival and is a long-time Bristol resident.

Fast forward and once again the pub is a cornerstone of its community and the famous Bristol music scene. A must-visit for anyone wanting to experience Bristol culture at its truest and best.
